Alexandria’s DASH bus system is offering a clear example of how electric transit grows from pilot deployment to long-term operations. The Alexandria Transit Company and the City of Alexandria began construction on a facility expansion that will support up to 30 additional buses and include infrastructure for up to 24 future overhead pantograph electric bus chargers.
The project is backed by state and regional resources, including part of an $11 million SMART SCALE grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, along with support from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority. The facility is expected to be completed by early 2027.
DASH has already deployed 16 battery-electric buses, with another 20 funded and in procurement. The agency and city adopted a goal in 2019 to transition the DASH fleet to 100% zero-emission vehicles.
The most important lesson is that electric transit is not only about purchasing buses. Agencies also need charging strategies, depot space, maintenance planning, workforce readiness, energy management and future-proofing for solar, battery storage and microgrid technologies. DASH’s expansion reflects that broader systems approach.
For riders, the promise is cleaner, quieter service. For Virginia communities, the project is a model for how public transit electrification can improve air quality, support local climate goals and deliver better mobility without requiring every trip to be made by car.
